India to run by Constitution, not Islamic law: Yogi Adityanath over hijab row

Lucknow, February 14: Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday spoke about the Karnataka hijab row and said that the system in India should run on the Constitution and not Shariat or the Islamic law. The UP CM was allegedly responding to AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi's remark that 'Hijab is a fundamental right and that one day a hijab-clad girl will become the PM.' “The Prime Minister scrapped the triple talaq law to free our (Muslim) daughters; to give them rights and the respect she's entitled to. To ensure respect to that daughter, we say that the system will be run on the Constitution of India and not Shariat,” added Adityanath. In an exclusive interview with ANI, the CM stated, "This is new India, this is the India of world's most popular leader Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In this new India, development is for all and there will be appeasement of none." Uttar Pradesh elections 2022: BJP will secure over 300 seats, says Yogi Adityanath "The dream of Gazva-e-Hind (ultimate conquest of India) will not be fulfilled even till the Qayamat," he added.

He further added that he never asked the public or workers in UP to wear saffron because what they wear is their personal choice. 'Constitution, not Islamic law' "I strongly believe that the system should run as per the Indian Constitution. We cannot impose our personal beliefs, our fundamental rights, our personal likes and dislikes on the country or institutions," he said. He went on to say, "Am I asking the people and workers in UP to wear saffron? What they want to wear is their choice. But in schools, there should be a dress code. This is the matter of schools and the discipline in schools." The Chief Minister also said that one's personal belief should be respected, "but when one talks about institutions, then one must accept the rules in place. In a national context, the Constitution should be followed." 'Constitution, not Islamic law' Responding to Owaisi's remark that Hijab is a fundamental right, Adityanath said, "It is for the freedom and rights of that every girl that PM Modi put a stop to the malpractice of Triple Talak. It is for ensuring justice and honour and empowerment of the girl that these decisions are being taken." "We can only say that the system will not work as per the Shariat, but will work as per the Constitution. When the system will work according to the constitution, every girl will be protected, honoured and become self-reliant," he added.
