HC extends Bikram Majithia’s interim bail till January 24
Punjab and Haryana High Court on Tuesday shielded Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia from arrest till January 24 by extending his interim bail. The SAD leader was booked in the drugs case. Bikram Singh Majithia has maintained that the FIR against him was 'politically motivated' and must be seen in the context of Punjab Assembly elections 2022. In a 49-page FIR filed by the state police Crime Branch at the Mohali police station, the SAD leader has been booked under sections 25, 27A and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. A bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court extended Bikram Singh Majithia's interim bail on Tuesday as the hearing could not take place amid the rising cases of Covid-19. The case against Bikram Singh Majithia has emerged as a talking point ahead of the Punjab Assembly elections 2022. On January 12, Bikram Majithia appeared before the SIT at the State Crime Branch office in Mohali in a drugs case. Majithia's lawyer DS Sobti had said, "We want a free and fair investigation so that the truth comes out." The SAD leader, booked by Punjab police under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, was granted interim bail by Punjab and Haryana High Court on January 10.
