Happy Dussehra 2022: India, on Wednesday, is celebrating one of the most auspicious Hindu festivals - Dussehra.
The term Dussehra is more commonly used in North Indian states and Karnataka, whilst Vijayadashami is more widely used in West Bengal. It's that time of year when the famous Ramlila is performed, magnificent fairs are held, and crowds swarm to witness Ravan effigies set ablaze.
It falls on the tenth day of Sharada Navratri, however, the celebrations and cultural practises vary by region in culturally diverse India, but the essence of the event remains. Here's everything you need to know about Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami.

The stories surrounding this celebration refer to Ramayana, the greatest epic written in the Age of Vedas. On this day in the Ramayana, Lord Ram killed Ravana in Lanka and brought back his wife Sita. As a result, the people of his kingdom lighted diyas to commemorate his victory, the triumph of good over evil. Thus began the Dussehra or Vijaya Dashmi festival.
There is another story associated with the festival of Dussehra. It is said that on this day Durga defeated Mahishasura after a fierce battle that lasted for more than nine days.

According to Hindu mythology, this festival commemorates Goddess Durga's victory over the demon Mahishasura, as well as Lord Rama's victory over Ravana.

The puja muhurat falls on October 5 from 02:07 pm to 02:54 pm, while the Durga Visarjan muhurat is from 6:16 am to 8:37 am, according to Drikpanchang.

This day is celebrated in a range of ways. Ram Leela, a staged recreation of Lord Rama's story, is performed in the North, particularly in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. The day is concluded with the burning of Ravana's effigy.
In Himachal Pradesh, it is known as Kullu Dussehra and is marked by a large fair and parade.

Dussehra is celebrated in the Western area with the Ravana Dean ceremony and Mata immersion. It is commemorated in the southern portion of the nation by lighting up all major temples and worshipping their livelihood tools.
This day is also devoted to Goddess Saraswati in several parts of the south. This day symbolises the farewell of Goddess Durga in the eastern portion of the nation, and the ladies perform sindoor Khela, followed by the immersion of Goddess Durga in water.
