Five essential tips to keep infections at bay during menstruation
New Delhi, July 16: Menstruation is one of the most significant and essential processes of a woman's body and it deserves utmost self-care. Hence, maintaining personal hygiene becomes essential in order to prevent infections while one is on their period.
During their periods, many women experience severe pain. The period cramps come with intense, throbbing and burning sensations in the lower abdomen. These cramps occur due to the contraction of the uterus in order to shed the endometrium.
Although menstruation is still taboo in some parts of the country, menstrual hygiene is a topic that needs to be publicly discussed because the opening of the cervix is a pathway for bacteria to enter the uterus and pelvic cavity, where they can cause a variety of infections.
So, here are some tips that can be helpful in lowering the risk of infection during periods:
Clean tampons
Whether a tampon is a biodegradable or disposable one, it must be properly clean to prevent infections when a woman is menstruating. It is crucial to use extra caution when using tampons as they are required to be inserted.
So, make sure to clean up your hands before using tampons.
Change sanitary pads regularly
You should change your sanitary pad every 2-4 hours. And, in case you cannot follow this throughout your periods, at least ensure to do this on the first two days when the flow is heavier.
Also, do not use the same pad for a long time with less bleeding. It can cause infection.

Taking showers
Maintaining personal hygiene is helpful in reducing infections and helps you feel fresh as well. Take showers at least twice daily as it helps in keeping infections at bay and gets rid of that unpleasant odour down there.
Avoid excessive use of vaginal wash or soap
It is advised to use a small amount of vaginal wash or soap to clean the region as the vagina is supposed to be self-cleaning. Also, using vaginal wash can cause an imbalance of vaginal flora.
Proper disposal of pads
It's very important to properly wrap your sanitary pads or tampons before disposing them off as doing so helps in preventing diseases and bacterial infections from growing in that region in the future.
