FIFA World Cup 2018: Defending champions Germany eliminated
It was Korea day. The Taeguk Warriors caused the biggest upset of World Cup so far, knocking out defending champions Germany by two extra - wastage - time goals. The win in the last and third round of group matches created history as Germany has been ousted at group matches stage for the first time in the history of the World Cup.
Though the win does not take Korea to the knockout stage but it made sure that Sweden play the last 16 round. In the other group F match, Sweden defeated Mexico 3-0. the outcome does not affect position of Mexico as it stands qualified for the next round with earlier two wins.
The hero of Korean win was its goalkeeper HW Cho who executed some brilliant saves. It was he who brought to nought all good moves by Germans, who unfortunately, were not at their best. Crestfallen Germans are to blame themselves for their unceremonious exit from a tournament of which they are last champions.
Disappointed and dejected at their showing in the World Cup here, the Germans must be looking for first available flight to return home.
It did not start well as the Germans lost their opening game to Mexico. And today everyone expected them to win against bottom placed Korea. But the Asian team packed too many surprises for its more fancied opponents.
At the end of goalless stipulated time of play, the Koreans scored twice in the first and sixth minute of extra - wastage - time through Kim Young Gwon and Son Heungwin - to send the Germans packing home.
In the other match, Mexico scored an "own" goal, the seventh of the tournament, to suffer 0-3 defeat at hands of Sweden. It may suit the Mexicans for they wanted the Germans out.
Ludwig Augustinsson, Andrea Granqvist were the scorers of first two goals for Sweden before Edison Alvarez's self goal completed the tally for Sweden.
