'Punjab 95': Diljit Dosanjh's film on Jaswant Singh Khalra dropped from Toronto Film Festival lineup?
Diljit Dosanjh-starrer 'Punjab 95', helmed by Honey Trehan, has been under the radar ever since its announcement.
The story is based on the life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist. During the militancy, Jaswant Singh Khalra fought against reported fake encounters of Sikh youths by the Punjab Police.
The filmmakers announced the film's premiere at the next Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in July 2023. However, according to recent reports, the film has been dropped from the lineup.
Variety, a US-based news outlet, broke the news. According to the report, there is currently no mention of the film on the festival's website.
The film was initially titled 'Ghallughara,' which refers to the massacres of Sikhs in 1746, 1762, and 1984. RSVP requested for certification from India's Central Board of Film Certification in late 2022, and the procedure took six months. The film was cleared after 21 edits and a title change to "Punjab '95." RSVP filed an appeal with the Bombay High Court. Variety said that the decision is still pending.
'Punjab 95' also has Arjun Rampal and Suvinder Pal Vicky.
