Nora Fatehi's 'deepfake' video sparks controversy: Unraveling the issue

PTC News Desk: In a surprising turn of events, actress Nora Fatehi recently shared a 'deepfake' video on her Instagram story, triggering a wave of discussions and concern across social media platforms. The video, initially appearing to be a routine advertisement for a retail clothing company's end-of-season sale, turned out to be part of a deliberate awareness campaign addressing online financial fraud.

The deceptive video begins with Nora Fatehi promoting an ongoing sale, urging viewers to participate. However, as the video unfolds, a transformation occurs, with Nora morphing into the character of Vigil Aunty, played by actress and theater artist Anuradha Menon. This character, reminiscent of Lola Kutty from [V] channel, serves as a creative means to convey an important message.

The clothing company's social media presented the ad as genuine, but a check on their website contradicted its authenticity. This intentional contradiction serves as a "scam or not scam" initiative to shed light on deceptive practices and the disparity between online advertisements and the actual nature of websites.

The overarching goal of this campaign is to educate the public about the risks of online transactions and the prevalence of financial fraud. Vigil Aunty, in the video, stresses the importance of vigilance against potential fraud, encouraging viewers to be cautious and recognize early warning signs, particularly when dealing with online shopping platforms.

Interestingly, Nora Fatehi's post coincided with the arrest of an individual responsible for creating a deepfake video of actor Rashmika Mandanna in Delhi. The incident, which went viral in November of the previous year, prompted a renewed call for regulations on social media platforms to curb the spread of manipulated content.
