New trailer of Kangana Ranaut’s 'Emergency' out; release set for January 17 after certain cuts in film
PTC Web Desk: Bollywood actress and BJP MP from Himachal Pradesh's Mandi Kangana Ranaut has unveiled the new trailer for her upcoming film 'Emergency' on social media platform X. The film, which faced objections regarding scenes related to Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and Khalistan, has undergone significant edits before its scheduled release on January 17.
Initially set to release on September 6, 2024, the movie was delayed due to clearance issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Approximately three months ago, the CBFC gave the approval to the film after a series of mandated changes.
'Emergency' faced backlash five months ago when Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, an independent MP from Faridkot and the son of Beant Singh (one of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassins), objected to certain scenes. Khalsa alleged that the movie portrayed Sikhs in a negative light, potentially disrupting communal harmony. He described the film as a "psychological attack" and urged the government to prevent it from spreading hatred against Sikhs globally.
In response, the CBFC issued a list of 10 modifications to the film’s production company, Manikarnika Films Pvt. Ltd. This included demands for factual references supporting controversial historical remarks made by figures like former U.S. President Richard Nixon and former UK Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Additionally, the board raised concerns over a scene depicting Pakistani soldiers attacking Bangladeshi refugees, including women and children, recommending its alteration or removal.
The CBFC instructed the deletion of three scenes after objections from Sikh organisations. Furthermore, it mandated the incorporation of 10 changes to address these concerns, delaying the film’s certification. Kangana Ranaut expressed her displeasure over the modifications but complied with the board’s directives.
'Emergency' is now poised for a January 17 release, with contentious elements removed or altered to meet regulatory and societal standards.
