Ludhiana court stays release of Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Amar Singh Chamkila biopic

‘Chamkila’ release stayed: A Ludhiana Court on Monday stayed the release of Diljit Dosanjh-starrer Amar Singh Chamkila biopic, titled 'Chamkila'. The director of the film, Imtiaz Ali and lead actors Diljit Dosanjh and Parineeti Chopra have been asked to appear before the court during the next hearing on May 3.

Giving details about the case pertaining to the release of the movie 'Chamkila,' Additional district attorney Pooja Singal said that the petitioner had filed an application on March 21 under which they demanded a stay on the release of the film.

According to the petition filed, the plaintiff's father Gurdev Singh Randhawa had signed a written agreement with Chamkila's first wife Gurmail Kaur under which he paid Rs 5 lakh to acquire the rights to produce any film on Amar Singh Chamkila and Bibi Amarjot Kaur. Gurmail Kaur had given the right of making biopic to Gurdev Randhawa on October 12, 2012 and no time limit was fixed to make the biopic.

Following the passing away of Gurdev Singh Randhawa on November 3, 2022, the legal rights were passed to his sons Ishdeep and Sanjot Randhawa, and wife Jaspreet Kaur.

When the petitioner began making plans for the biopic and contacted Gurmail Kaur, she began delaying the matter on various grounds. They later discovered that the defendants were working together to make a film about Chamkila and Bibi Amarjot Kaur.

Attorney Pooja Singal further informed that the defendants had no right to produce the film.
