Kunal Kamra row: Jaya Bachchan backs stand-up comedian amid free speech controversy
PTC Web Desk: Actor and Samajwadi Party (SP) MP Jaya Bachchan has voiced her support for stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra following the controversy over his recent remarks. Speaking to reporters at the Parliament premises, she questioned the curbs on freedom of speech and criticised the broader restrictions on expression.
Expressing concern over the ongoing row and the vandalism of a comedy venue, Jaya Bachchan said, "If there are restrictions on speaking, what will happen to you? You are already in a bad situation. You are told what to say and what not to say. Tomorrow, you may even be told not to interview Jaya Bachchan."
Taking a sharp dig at Maharashtra's political landscape, she further said, "Where is the freedom of speech? Freedom of action exists only when there’s chaos—attacking the opposition, committing crimes against women, or engaging in violence. What else? You (Eknath Shinde) left your original party and formed a new one for power. Isn't that an insult to Balasaheb?"
Several political leaders, including MPs from Shiv Sena (UBT), have also spoken in support of Kamra’s right to free expression. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Arvind Sawant defended the comedian, asserting that every statement in his stand-up special Naya Bharat was factually correct.
The controversy erupted after Kamra allegedly made defamatory remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde during a comedy show. The situation escalated when members of the Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde) youth wing stormed the Habitat Comedy Club in Mumbai, disrupted an ongoing live performance, and vandalised the venue.
An FIR has been registered against both Kamra for his remarks and the youth wing members for the destruction of property. Sub-Inspector Vijay from Khar Police Station confirmed that the venue was specifically targeted following the release of Naya Bharat.
