Kangana Ranaut's film 'Emergency' postponed amid controversy over Sikh community portrayal; more cuts sought

Kangana Ranaut news: The release of Kangana Ranaut's film "Emergency" has been postponed following a significant controversy over its depiction of the Sikh community. The trailer's release sparked outrage in Punjab, leading to delays as the film awaits approval from the Certification Board. Originally scheduled for release on September 6, the film's debut has now been pushed back.

Sources said the Certification Board has requested additional cuts to the film, stressing the need to consider the sentiments of every community before granting approval.

The Shiromani Akali Dal had earlier sent a legal notice to the Board, urging them to halt the film's release, arguing that it could "incite communal tensions" and "spread misinformation." The notice, dated August 27, claimed that the film Emergency portrays the Sikh community in a "misleading and offensive manner," potentially harming the social harmony of Punjab and the broader nation. The notice also criticised Ranaut, accusing her of using the subject of the Emergency not for a genuine political or historical critique, but as a means to target the Sikh community.

In response to the controversy, Kangana Ranaut has stated that she is prepared to defend the film in court. She expressed frustration over the pressure to exclude key historical events from the film, such as the assassination of Indira Gandhi, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, and the Punjab riots. "I don't know what we will show then," she remarked in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

"This is an unbelievable time for me, and I am deeply sorry for the current state of affairs in this country," Kangana Ranaut added.
