Setback for Kangana Ranaut's 'Emergency', HC says 'cannot ask CBFC to issue certificate'
PTC News Desk: Kangana Ranaut's film 'Emergency' received no relief from the Bombay High Court today. The court stated that it cannot ask the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to give a certificate to the film's makers as this would contradict a Madhya Pradesh High Court order.
The movie is co-produced by Kangana Ranaut's Manikarnika Films and Zee Studios.
The Madhya Pradesh High Court had earlier directed CBFC to consider representations of Sikh groups who had filed petitions before it. The court has asked CBFC to take a decision by September 18, next hearing on September 19.
Earlier, Zee Entertainment Enterprises approached the Bombay High Court seeking a direction to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) to issue certificate for the film.
Kangana Ranaut starrer film was scheduled for release on September 6. However, the film is caught up in controversy with the Sikh community seeking its ban across the nation for misrepresenting the community and getting historical facts wrong.
The petition before the high court stated that the CBFC delayed the certification "illegally and arbitrarily". According to a lawyer, the petition alleged that the Censor board was ready with the certificate but did not issue it.
Kangana Ranaut, who directed and co-produced the film in addition to playing the main role of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, accused the CBFC on Monday of delaying certification to prevent the release.
