Kangana Ranaut announces postponement of 'Emergency'; new release date to be revealed soon

PTC News Desk: Kangana Ranaut has confirmed that her film Emergency has been postponed. Initially set for release on Friday, September 6, the movie has yet to receive certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). On Friday, Kangana announced via her X (formerly Twitter) account that a new release date for her directorial debut will be announced soon.

“With a heavy heart, I announce that my directorial Emergency has been postponed. We are still waiting for the certification from the censor board. A new release date will be announced soon. Thanks for your understanding and patience,” she wrote.

The postponement follows a recent Bombay High Court decision not to intervene in the matter. This came after the Madhya Pradesh High Court directed the CBFC to consider objections raised against the film before granting certification. The CBFC has been instructed to resolve these objections and finalize the certification by September 18.

Earlier, Kangana had expressed frustration over the delay, indicating her readiness to fight for the film’s release. “It’s getting too late. I hope the film comes out on time. Otherwise, I am determined to fight for it. I am prepared to go to court to protect my film and my rights as an individual. You can’t change history and intimidate us with threats,” she said.

Kangana also claimed that the CBFC was illegally withholding the film’s certification. She defended the film’s portrayal of historical events, stressing the importance of depicting history accurately. “We have to show the history. An almost 70-year-old woman was shot 30-35 times in her house. Someone must have killed her. Now you want to show it... But you have to show the history. So how did she die?” Kangana said.

In Emergency, Kangana not only stars but also directs. The film features Anupam Kher, Milind Soman, Mahima Chaudhry, and Shreyas Talpade, with Talpade portraying Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Kher playing Jayaprakash Narayan. The late actor Satish Kaushik is also featured as Former Deputy Prime Minister Jagjivan Ram.

However, the film has faced controversy, with calls for boycotts and bans from several Sikh organizations. The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and Akhal Takht have demanded an immediate ban, alleging that the film portrays the Sikh community negatively and seeks to “character assassinate” them.
