'Jaat' movie triggers controversy, FIR filed against Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda in Punjab
PTC Web Desk: Bollywood action film ‘Jaat’, released on April 10, has sparked a major controversy, with an FIR registered against actors Sunny Deol, Randeep Hooda, Vineet Kumar Singh, as well as the film’s director and producers, for allegedly hurting religious sentiments.
The FIR, lodged by the Jalandhar police on Wednesday, invokes Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings.
The complaint alleges that a particular scene in the film has “deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Christian community.” According to the complainant, the scene depicts Randeep Hooda’s character standing beneath a crucifix inside a church, above the holy pulpit, during a moment of prayer. It reportedly includes acts of intimidation and inappropriate behavior.
Accusing the filmmakers of intentionally releasing 'Jaat' during the holy period of Good Friday and Easter, the complainant claimed the move was aimed at provoking outrage and unrest across the country. A ban on the film has been demanded.
Directed by Gopichand Malineni in his Hindi directorial debut, 'Jaat' stars Sunny Deol in the lead role, with Randeep Hooda playing the main antagonist. The supporting cast includes Vineet Kumar Singh, Saiyami Kher, Regina Cassandra, Prashant Bajaj, Zarina Wahab, and Jagapathi Babu.
Produced by Mythri Movie Makers and People Media Factory, 'Jaat' was released in Hindi, Tamil, and Telugu, and grossed over Rs 32 crore in its opening weekend. Amid the controversy, Sunny Deol announced on Thursday that he will return with a sequel, Jaat 2.
