Global shortage of pink colour? Here is how 'world ran out of pink' due to Margot Robbie's Barbie
The upcoming Hollywood film Barbie has caused a global shortage of pink colour. Yes, you heard it right. According to Architectural Digest, the film's production designer said that the set construction used so much paint that "the world ran out of pink."
Sarah Greenwood talked about the construction of Barbie sets in an interview with the magazine and said, “Maintaining the ‘kid-ness' was paramount.“ She further added that she “wanted the pinks to be very bright, and everything to be almost too much”.
The production designer stated that she did not want to forget what made her fall in love with Barbie as a child. When discussing the sets, she revealed that the amount of pink used in their construction caused a worldwide paint shortage.
However, according to Rosco, the business that supplied pink paint for Barbie, the Covid-19 pandemic interrupted the global supply chain, and Barbie production in 2022 contributed to the pink paint shortage.
Lauren Proud, Rosco's vice president of global marketing, told the Los Angeles Times, "They used as much paint as we had." She further added that there “was this shortage” and “then we gave them everything we could – I don't know if they can claim credit”.
“They did clean us out on paint,” Proud added.
According to Architectural Digest, Barbie's set decorators Katie Spencer and Sarah Greenwood never owned a Barbie and instead used an Amazon Dreamhouse as inspiration for the settings. "The scale was quite strange," Katie Spencer observed.
