Demolition drive underway in Chandigarh's Colony number 4; Section 144 imposed
Chandigarh, May 1: A demolition drive is underway in Chandigarh's colony Number 4. Section 144 has been imposed in the surrounding area.
Notably, it is the biggest recent demolition drive after colony number 5.
Keeping the possibility of heavy protests in view, about 2,000 cops and 10 executive magistrates have been deployed for the operation. Section 144 has been imposed within 500 meters of the area, says an official.

"District Magistrate UT Chandigarh imposes Section 144 CrPC till midnight today in Colony no 4, Industrial Area, Phase -1 Chandigarh and within 500 meters from its periphery ahead of demolition to be carried out in the area today," the order stated.
Meanwhile, on Saturday, around 290 people of the colony were allotted small flats at Maloya under the Affordable Rental Housing Scheme (ARHC) following a computerised draw on the day.
The restriction and heavy security was enacted in response to fears that residents of the colony would obstruct, annoy, or harm persons lawfully employed or other general public during the demolition process.

Residents were given a three-month notice to vacate the land by the Chandigarh administration in February. According to, the colony is home to nearly 10,000 slum dwellers.
