Dalit activist Nodeep Kaur taken to police custody; Meena Harris comes in support
Meena Harris on Nodeep Kaur: Amid farmers' protest against farm laws 2020, a Dalit activist Nodeep Kaur, who fought for workers and joined the agitation, has been taken into custody by Haryana Police. She is a 23-year-old Dalit woman and a trade union activist who joined the agitation against the farm laws in the early days of November. Following the violence, a huge number of people were arrested by Delhi Police. Also, Nodeep has been denied bail twice as she is charged with several IPC sections including Section 307 – attempt to murder. The next hearing on her bail plea is scheduled to be held on February 8, the day she will complete 26 days in police custody. She completed class 12 a few years ago and started working in a factory as a worker. Before joining the farmers’ protest, she was working at a bulb-making factory, named FIEM Industries, in Kundli. She belongs to a family of activists as her parents are associated with the Punjab Khet Union in Muktsar while her elder sister Rajveer Kaur is a student activist from Delhi University. Likewise, the Dalit activist Nodeep Kaur also joined Mazdoor Adhikar Sangathan (MAS) – a union of the workers and farmers – in Kundli. "Weird to see a photo of yourself burned by an extremist mob but imagine what they would do if we lived in India. I'll tell you—23 yo labor rights activist Nodeep Kaur was arrested, tortured & sexually assaulted in police custody. She's been detained without bail for over 20 days," said Meena Harris on Nodeep Kaur. "This isn't just about agricultural policy. It's also about the persecution of a vocal religious minority. It's police violence, militant nationalism, and attacks on labor rights. It's global authoritarianism. Don't tell me to stay out of your affairs. These are all of our issues," she stated. -PTC News
