Coronavirus updates: India reports highest single-day spike in 2021

Coronavirus India Updates: India on Saturday reported 24,882 new cases of COVID-19, the highest so far this year, taking the caseload to 1,13,33,728, according to Union health ministry. Also, this is the highest daily spike in the last 83 days. On December 20, around 26,624 new cases were recorded. The death toll in India due to COVID-19 climbed to 1,58,446 with 140 new deaths, the ministry data updated at 8 am stated. The active caseload in India has increased to 2,02,022 that constitutes 1.74 percent of the total infections while the recovery rate has dropped to 96.82 percent. The total number of people who have recovered from the contagious disease has increased to 1,09,73,260 while the case fatality rate stands at 1.40 percent, the Health Ministry stated while giving updates regarding coronavirus in India. The COVID tally in India crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16. It crossed 60-lakh mark on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and one-crore mark on December 19. The Indian Council of Medical Research stated 22,58,39,273 samples have been tested until March 12 that includes 8,40,635 that were done on Friday. Among 140 new deaths, Maharashtra reported 56, Punjab 34 and Kerala 14. Among the total deaths in the country, 52,723 are from Maharashtra, 12,539 from Tamil Nadu, 12,386 from Karnataka, 10,936 from Delhi, 10,287 from West Bengal, 8,743 from Uttar Pradesh and 7,180 from Andhra Pradesh.
