India surpasses Russia to become third-worst coronavirus-hit country; tally nears 7 lakh
India on Monday surpassed Russia to become the third-worst coronavirus-hit country with the total number of cases reaching near 7 lakh. India reported a spike of 24,248 new COVID-19 cases and 425 deaths in the last 24 hours, as of Monday morning. Meanwhile, the total number of cases in India has increased to 6,97,413 including 2,53,287 active cases, 4,24,433 cured and discharged and 19,693 deaths, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare stated. Likewise, a total of 15,350 patients were declared cured and discharged in the last 24 hours. Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) stated that the total number of samples tested up to July 5 is 99,69,662 of which 1,80,596 samples were tested on Sunday. Currently, the US is on top with 2,982,928 cases followed by Brazil at 1,604,585, India at 6,97,836 and Russia at 6,81,251. The coronavirus cases have been rising ever since Unlock criteria have started in the country. While the total number of coronavirus cases in India has been rising, the AIIMS Director Randeep Guleria had stated that India is vulnerable to the second wave of COVID-19.
