The arrest of Youth Congress leader Guriqbal Singh alias Roopa by Amritsar police with heroine – a psychotropic drug-has given shivers down the common man and NGOs working for eradication of drug menace in the state.
Besides, couple of criminals who indulged in various criminal activities were seen in the company of Congress legislator Inderbir Singh Bularia at a function suggesting Congress leaders proximity to the criminal and what is revealed in the media is just a tip of iceberg.
In a statement issued here today, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) spokesman Mahesh Inder Singh Grewal said that it was shocking that the Congress party that had come to power on promise of wiping out drug menace from Punjab but now the Congress leaders themselves are peddling in drugs. Grewal said that Rupa is not ordinary Congress worker but heads of Youth Congress Anti-narcotic cell of Gharinda block.
“ If the leaders who are assigned the task of controlling drug menace are themselves involved in the drug racket, the menace is likely to be compounded many times and this is exactly happening in the state”, rued Grewal adding that all this is happening under the patronage of party leadership. This has created a panic in the people who are witness ever increasing deaths of addicted young men in their cities and villages in recent days.
Grewal said that Bularia in the company of known criminals only embolden the criminals as a class and this patronage by the ruling party legislators and ministers has worsened the law and order situation in the state.
The SAD leader said that the government and ruling party have entered into an unholy alliance with criminals or has grossly failed in controlling the deteriorating condition.
He urged the ruling party come clean why its leaders are indulging in trading drugs and mixing up with criminals and show courage to throw out such elements from the party.
