Collegium recommends Justice BR Gavai and Justice Surya Kant for elevation to SC
The Supreme Court Collegium recommended the names of Justices Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai and Surya Kant to the Centre for the elevation as apex court judges on Thursday. Both the judges have been recommended after taking into consideration the seniority criterion as well as their competence, conduct and integrity.

Justice BR Gavai’s elevation has been recommended after keeping in view the SC/ST category at the apex court. According to the order by the Collegium, “With his appointment, the Supreme Court will have a judge belonging to the Scheduled Caste category after about a decade.”

In this context, the Collegium also emphasizes that “Justice Surya Kant’s proposed elevation was made also keeping in mind the desirability of giving due representation on the Bench of the Supreme Court, as far as possible, to all the High Courts.”
