Nek Chand's legacy Rock Garden faces demolition, sparks public outrage
PTC News Desk: In a controversial move, Nek Chand's legacy the iconic Rock Garden is facing demolition in some of its parts while also cutting trees on either side of it for a road-widening project. The demolition drive is taking place in order to create additional parking space near High Court. It is learnt that a stretch of around 25 ft of the Rock Garden is planned to be removed.
The demolition has sparked outrage among locals, as the Rock Garden, a symbol of creativity and sustainable art, holds significant emotional and cultural value for the people of Chandigarh. Nek Chand’s son, Anuj Saini, has voiced his strong concern over the harm done to his father's legacy.
The action has been widely criticized by heritage conservationists, who argue that destroying such a distinctive landmark undermines both Chandigarh's environmental and historical significance. In response, concerned citizens have called for immediate action, organizing a protest at the Rock Garden (High Court parking side) at 3 pm on Sunday.
A poster circulating online urges people to unite against the demolition and safeguard the city's unique heritage. The poster features a heartbreaking image of bulldozers tearing down parts of the Rock Garden's wall, highlighting the gravity of what is being lost.
Chandigarh Heritage Conservation Committee (CHCC) member, requesting anonymity, criticised the administration, saying, "Nek Chand's precious creation is being demolished in part to make way for a road and parking of polluting vehicles. Many great, beautiful old trees were also cut, without thinking how much damage that will do to our environment. The world is converting concrete city centres into green areas; to have a cleaner environment, we are doing the opposite."
