Airtel Hits Back: Refutes data breach allegations, labels accusations as a desperate attempt to smear reputation

PTC News Desk: Airtel India has vehemently denied allegations of a data breach that reportedly exposed the details of 375 million customers, claiming the accusations are a deliberate attempt to damage its reputation.

Alleged Data Breach Details

The claims surfaced on the platform Dark Web Informer on X (formerly Twitter), where it was alleged that an unauthentic data hacker known as xenZen is selling the data of Airtel India customers. The breach allegedly includes comprehensive customer details such as:

  1. Mobile number
  2. Name
  3. Date of birth
  4. Father's name
  5. Local address
  6. Permanent address
  7. Alternate number
  8. Email ID
  9. Gender
  10. Nationality
  11. Connection type
  12. SIM activation date
  13. Aadhaar details
  14. Photo ID proof details
  15. Address proof details

This purported data set, updated until June 2024, is reportedly being sold for USD 50,000 in XMR (Monero). Screenshots posted by Dark Web Informer from a community called BreachForums show an account advertising the sale of the latest Airtel India customer database. The seller also claims responsibility for a recent data leak involving the Indian Ministry of External Affairs.

Airtel India's Response

In response to these allegations, Airtel India issued a strong denial. The company stated:

“There has been a report alleging that Airtel customer data has been compromised. This is nothing short of a desperate attempt to tarnish Airtel’s reputation by vested interests. We have conducted a thorough investigation and can confirm that there has been no breach whatsoever from Airtel systems.”

Airtel emphasised that it has taken all necessary measures to ensure the security of its customer data and reassured its users that their information is safe and secure.

The telecom giant's firm rebuttal seeks to reassure customers and stakeholders that the company's data protection mechanisms are robust and uncompromised. Airtel continues to monitor the situation closely and is committed to safeguarding the privacy and security of its customers.
