Ford Motor's Chennai plant all set to restart manufacturing after 2 years

PTC Web Desk: Ford Motor Company has announced plans to restart its manufacturing operations in Tamil Nadu, India, focusing on exports. This move marks a potential re-entry into the Indian market, three years after the company ceased domestic production. Ford's decision follows discussions with the Tamil Nadu government, with a letter of intent already submitted, the company confirmed on Friday.

Ford exited the Indian market in 2021 after struggling to compete in the highly competitive domestic car market, which is dominated by Asian automakers. In 2022, it also halted exports, effectively closing its operations in the country. The company's facility in Chennai had previously been used for producing cars and engines.

Ford’s statement said the plant would be re-purposed for manufacturing vehicles for export to global markets. However, details regarding the specific models to be produced are yet to be disclosed.

This development comes after Tamil Nadu's chief minister hinted earlier in the week that the state and Ford were negotiating to restart manufacturing.
