Apple Pay may soon be compatible with Chrome, Edge, Firefox

Washington (US), August 1: With the release of iOS 16 beta 4, Apple may have finally included compatibility for Microsoft Edge, Google Chrome, and Mozilla Firefox in the stable version of the operating system.

The Verge reports that MacRumors contributor Steve Moser found that Apple Pay functions with Edge and Chrome in the iOS 16 beta 4 and tweeted about his observation. The screenshot shared read, "Continue with Apple Pay" option on Apple's checkout page while using Edge. According to The Verge, Apple Pay only works in Safari on iOS 15 and older, preventing you from using any other browser if you want to pay with Apple Pay when shopping on the web. "On the latest iOS 16 beta, Apple Pay works in Edge, Chrome and I assume any third party browser. On iOS 15 Apple Pay only works in Safari," he said while sharing the screenshots.

In another tweet, he added, "This doesn't work in Edge or Chrome on that latest macOS beta because I assume it requires the third party render engines to be updated whereas Edge and Chrome on iOS use Safari's render engine."

Moser doesn't mention Firefox, but prior to the release of iOS 16 beta 4, other users found the browser to be Apple Pay compatible. Earlier, this month, a post on Reddit showed an option to pay with Apple Pay in iOS 16 beta 2 while using Firefox.

Meanwhile, another user on iOS 16 beta 3 said that they have the option to pay with Apple Pay on Firefox as well. We are however not certain of when Apple started expanding support for Apple Pay, and to which browsers. According to Moser, Apple Pay is still unavailable in the most recent macOS beta. This is probably because Apple requires that Safari's rendering engine, WebKit, be used on iOS by Chrome, Edge, and Firefox. According to The Verge, since third-party browsers on macOS are free to use their own engines, Apple Pay compatibility outside of Safari on Macs may not come anytime soon.
