Thailand’s first Olympic gold medallist Somluck Kamsing jailed for abduction, attempted sexual assault
Somluck, now 52, who also claimed boxing titles at the 1994 and 1998 Asian Games, has denied all allegations
PTC Web Desk: Somluck Kamsing, Thailand’s first Olympic gold medallist, has been sentenced to just over three years in prison by the Khon Kaen provincial court for charges of abduction and attempted sexual assault of a teenager. Kamsing, who rose to national fame after winning the featherweight boxing gold at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, was found guilty of child abduction for molestation and attempted sexual assault.
The court stated, “For attempted sexual assault by force and taking a person aged between 15 and 18 for indecency, the defendant’s actions violate multiple laws.” Somluck has filed an appeal, and the court granted him bail set at 300,000 baht ($9,000). He was also ordered to pay $5,000 in damages to the victim.
The case stems from a December 2023 complaint by a 17-year-old girl who alleged that Somluck assaulted her at a hotel in Khon Kaen, a city in northeastern Thailand. Police reports confirmed that Somluck met the teenager at a bar, where they remained until the early hours of the morning before the alleged incident occurred.
Somluck, now 52, who also claimed boxing titles at the 1994 and 1998 Asian Games, has denied all allegations. Despite the conviction, he remains out on bail as his appeal process is underway.
