South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol impeached over martial law declaration

PTC Web Desk: South Korean lawmakers have impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol following widespread outrage over his martial law declaration, which triggered a constitutional crisis. The National Assembly voted on the impeachment motion, with 204 of the 300 members supporting it and 85 opposing.

Under South Korea's Constitution, Prime Minister Han Duck-soo will serve as interim leader until the Constitutional Court decides whether to reinstate or permanently remove Yoon from office. This decision could take up to six months. 

The controversy erupted on December 3 when Yoon declared martial law, deploying soldiers to the National Assembly. Reports indicated that the soldiers were instructed to prevent lawmakers from reaching the required 150 votes to overturn the martial law. Yoon justified his actions by accusing the opposition of crippling the government. However, the martial law was rescinded within hours after being voted down.

Initially, Yoon survived an impeachment motion after his People Power Party boycotted a vote. However, this time, some party members joined the opposition to pass the motion.

Opposition Democratic Party floor leader Park Chan-dae celebrated the outcome, stating, "This is a victory for the South Korean people and for democracy." Meanwhile, Yoon has yet to respond publicly. Yoon also faces potential criminal investigations for his martial law declaration.
