Pakistan PM Sharif congratulates Trump for poll win, gets flagged for using VPN; users mock
Sharif was forced to use VPN as his own government had banned X earlier this year in Pakistan citing national security reasons.
PTC News Desk: Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif congratulated Donald Trump for winning Presidential elections but what caught the attention of this congratulatory message was the connection. He took to his social media X which is the same platform that he has banned in the country.
“Congratulations to President-elect Donald Trump on his historic victory for a second term! I look forward to working closely with the incoming Administration to further strengthen and broaden the Pakistan-U.S. partnership," Sharif posted on X.
The community note flagged that he was using a VPN which was unlawful in the country.
“PM Shehbaz Sharif has banned X (formerly Twitter), in Pakistan. He is using a VPN to access X, which is unlawful according to Pakistani law," the note read. The lastest move by Pakistan PM drew severe flak by Pakistani nationals as he used the platform to congratulate without uplifting the ban.
Sharif was forced to use VPN as his own government had banned X earlier this year in Pakistan citing national security reasons. Information Minister Attaullah Tarar had claimed that Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) militants were using the platform to spread “anti-national activities".
