PTC News Desk: Nikki Haley, the former United Nations ambassador and a prominent Republican figure, clinched her first primary victory in Washington D.C., marking a symbolic win as she contends against Donald Trump in the GOP race. This triumph in the nation's capital precedes a crucial juncture in the extensive U.S. nominating process – Super Tuesday, during which 15 states and one territory cast their votes.

Washington D.C. is predominantly Democratic, with a relatively small population of registered Republicans, estimated to be around 22,000 according to CNN. Despite this, Haley managed to secure 63 per cent of the votes in the primary, which was held at a single location – a downtown hotel – as reported by Politico, citing Washington party officials.

It's noteworthy that in the 2020 election, then-candidate Joe Biden overwhelmingly won 92 percent of the votes in Washington D.C. Historically, the city has never favored a Republican presidential candidate with a majority vote.

Responding to her victory, Haley's campaign released a statement suggesting that Republicans who are intimately familiar with the dysfunction in Washington are rejecting Trump and his tumultuous leadership style. In contrast, Trump's campaign issued a statement dubbing Haley as the "Queen of The Swamp," implying her proximity to the perceived political establishment.

As Super Tuesday looms, Trump is poised to secure the Republican Party's presidential nomination, having already swept through the early state primaries. This pivotal moment is viewed as the last significant opportunity for Haley to disrupt Trump's trajectory towards becoming the party's standard-bearer once again, pitted against Biden in the upcoming election.
