PTC Web Desk: An Indian national working as a labourer on a farm in Italy died on Wednesday after being left on the side of the road following an accident that severed his arm.
On Monday, the Indian Embassy in Italy issued a statement condoling Satnam Singh's "unfortunate demise".
"The Embassy is aware of the very unfortunate demise of an Indian national in Latina, Italy. We are in contact with local authorities. Efforts are underway to contact the family and provide consular assistance," the post stated.
Satnam Singh, aged 30 to 31, was injured on Monday while working at a farm in Latina. He was cutting hay when his arm was severed by a machine, according to the Flai CGIL trade union (an Italian organisation for workers in the agriculture and food industry).
Instead of helping Satnam Singh, his employers "dumped" him like a "bag of rubbish near his home," according to AFP, citing a statement from Flai CGIL that compared the situation to a "horror film."
Satnam Singh was working on the farm without legal papers.
Italian Labour Minister Marina Calderone described the incident as "a true act of " in Parliament.
She went on to say that authorities were looking into the incident and that she hoped those responsible would face consequences.
According to reports, Satnam was injured on Monday while cutting hay and accidentally severed his arm in the slicing machine. Satnam's wife and friends reportedly called the police about the incident, and an air ambulance was dispatched to Satnam's home.
In a Facebook post, Italy's opposition party, the Democratic Party, stated that the conditions under which Satnam Singh was "forced to work" were not suitable.
The party further stated, "As the Democratic Party we are close to Satnam Singh's wife and all his loved ones, aware that the profound pain of separation associates the dramatic awareness of the double violence suffered."
