South Korea: Impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol arrested over martial law fiasco
This is the first time in South Korea's history that a sitting President has been arrested.
PTC News Desk: South Korean investigators have arrested impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over the controversial martial law episode. This is the first time in South Korea's history that a sitting President has been arrested.
A motorcade was seen leaving the gates of his hillside residence where Yoon has been holed up for weeks behind barbed wire barriers and a small army of personal security.
Investigators on Wednesday found themselves in a tense standoff with security forces at the presidential residence, as they made a second attempt to arrest impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol over his brief imposition of martial law.
President Yoon's lawyers have argued objecting his apprehension and are sheer attempts to humiliate him. The warrant investigators secured for his arrest is the first ever issued against an incumbent South Korean president.
The Seoul Western District Court had previously issued the warrants for Yoon after he ignored three summonses to appear for questioning regarding his unsuccessful attempt to impose martial law on December 3. These warrants, which were extended last week after their initial expiration, will remain active until January 21.
