China: Explosion at coal mine leaves 11 dead

China coal mine explosion: At least 11 people were killed in a coal mine explosion in Shaanxi province in northern China, state media reported Tuesday.

The blast occurred on Monday around 8:26 p.m. at the Xintai Coal Mine near Yan'an, according to state broadcaster CCTV, citing the municipal emergency management bureau.

According to CCTV, there were 90 people inside the mine at the time of the explosion, nine of them became trapped inside and were "found with no vital signs" at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday.

Two other survivors were "seriously injured and died after resuscitation efforts failed," according to the broadcaster.

It went on to claim that 11 other persons had been "lightly injured" and were taken to the hospital for treatment, adding that "their vital signs are stable."

"The cause of the accident is currently under investigation," CCTV stated.

In recent decades, mining safety in China has improved, as has media coverage of important incidents, many of which were previously overlooked.
