Canadian PM Justin Trudeau, wife Sophie announce separation after 18 years of marriage

Justin Trudeau, wife announce divorce: Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau have announced separation after 18 years of marriage, according to Canadian broadcaster CTV.

Justin and Sophie both took to Instagram to make a brief statement on their divorce.

“After many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate,” they said. "As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build," the statement added.

The Trudeaus are asking Canadians to respect their privacy at this time for the sake of the well-being of their kids. The Trudeaus have three children -  Xavier (15), Ella-Grace (14), and Hadrien (9).

PMO, Canada confirms separation

Meanwhile, the Prime Minister's Office of Canada (PMO) confirmed in a separate statement that the couple has "signed a legal separation agreement."

"They have worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward," PMO spokesperson Alison Murphy said.

According to Trudeau's office, the PM and Sophie are "focused on raising their kids in a safe, loving, and collaborative environment," and both will be a "constant presence in their children's lives."

Canadians can expect to "often see the family together, and they plan to be together on vacation beginning next week," according to the statement.

According to CTV, the duo has had a strong public and international following since Trudeau's time in elected office.

Justin Trudeau married in Montreal on May 28, 2005.
