Canada: Indian-origin builder shot dead at Edmonton construction site

PTC News Desk: Tragedy struck in Edmonton as Buta Singh Gill, an Indian-Canadian builder, was gunned down at a construction site, alongside another unidentified individual, in broad daylight. Gill, known for his affiliation with the Sikh temple in the city and his deep connections within the Punjabi community, was a respected figure in Edmonton.

The incident unfolded on Monday in the Cavanagh area of the city, shocking residents and prompting an immediate response from law enforcement. Gill, the owner of Gill Built Homes Ltd., a prominent luxury home construction company in Edmonton, was reportedly conducting routine site checks when the shooting occurred.

The Edmonton Police Service swiftly responded to the incident, reassuring the public of no immediate threats to safety. However, one man, aged 51, sustained serious life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital.

In the aftermath of the shooting, approximately 50 individuals, predominantly from the South Asian home-building community, gathered at the site to mourn the loss and seek answers. Former city councillor Mohinder Banga, who knew Gill personally, expressed shock and sorrow over the tragic event. Gill, described as a compassionate and devout individual, was lauded for his willingness to assist others and his active involvement in the Sikh temple.

The close-knit Punjabi and East Indian communities rallied together, offering support and solidarity to Gill's grieving family. Survived by his wife and two children, Gill's untimely demise has left a void in the community, with many questioning the senseless act of violence against such a benevolent figure. As investigations continue, the motive behind the shooting remains unclear, leaving many in shock and disbelief.
