Unit of Ropar thermal plant resumes operations; power situation eases in Punjab

Patiala, May 20: Amid the ongoing power crisis in Punjab, one unit of Guru Gobind Singh Super thermal power plant (Ropar thermal plant) resumed operations on Thursday night. The unit of 210 MW at the Ropar thermal plant was shut due to leakage in the boiler on Monday night. Meanwhile, 3 of 4 units of Lehra Mohabbat thermal plant remain shut due to technical glitches and a shortage of coal supplies. In great relief to residents of Punjab, all the units of Talwandi Sabo and Rajpura thermal plant are operating at full capacity. In Punjab, four of the 15 units of five thermal plants have been shut down. Due to the shutdown of thermal units, there is a 950 MW power shortage. The demand for electricity in Punjab had increased dramatically due to increasing temperature, forcing many units of thermal plants in Punjab to shut down. Due to the closure of thermal plant units, the power supply was severely hampered. People in Punjab have been facing long, unannounced power cuts.
