Ever since the nation is hit by the outbreak of coronavirus pandemic, the educational institutions have been closed. In fact, some schools and colleges are being used as a COVID centre in various states. In the meanwhile, the whole nation was waiting for the University Grants Commission (UGC) guidelines. Basically, the students were eager to know whether there will be exams for final year students of colleges and universities or not.
The UGC in its guidelines announced that the exams for final year students will be conducted by September end. Afterwards, several experts and state governments have appealed to the Centre and the UGC to review the decision on the conduct of examinations.
University Grant Commission (UGC) Secretary Prof Rajnish Jain stated that "Conducting final year examinations for graduation or post-graduation courses is very important, and the safety of students is our prime concern."
He also said that Universities and colleges can opt to conduct exams through online and offline mode. "The Guidelines for the conduct of exams have been issued on the basis of the Standard Operating Procedure suggested by the Health Ministry. All states should conduct exams for final year students,” he added.

There are various states such as Punjab who had announced the cancellation of university and college exams due to the hike in coronavirus cases. On Thursday, the Punjab government wrote to the centre expressing their inability to conduct the final year university exams. Likewise, the Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh said that he will be writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi urging to cancel the final year exams.
