Room heater tragedy: Elderly couple dies as temperature hits 537°C
South Carolina (US), January 11: In a tragic incident, an elderly couple, identified as Joan Littlejohn (84) and Glennwood Fowler (82) found dead in their Spartanburg home, United States, on Saturday. The room heater, reaching an alarming 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (537 degrees Celsius), is believed to be the cause of their tragic death. The US couple's family members, growing concerned after not hearing from them since January 3, contacted the police, leading to the distressing discovery. Investigations are ongoing, and the community mourns the loss of the elderly couple.
Notably, responding to concerns raised by family members, the police entered the residence of Joan Littlejohn and Glennwood Fowler through an unsecured window. When the cops entered the home, an interior deemed 'extremely hot' and the couple was found dead in their bedroom, as reported by People Magazine, citing information provided by the police. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding their untimely demise are currently underway.
According to a report from the New York Post, doctors, in an attempt to measure the body temperatures of the US couple, discovered readings that surpassed the standard body temperature of most adults, set at 98.6 degrees Celsius. The elevated temperatures raised concerns. Firefighters, initially suspecting a potential fire hazard, were also called to the scene.
The authorities measured the temperature of the room heater to be around 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (537 degrees Celsius) before taking corrective action to shut it down, as confirmed by the police. Family members of the couple had visited them after they reported issues with their furnace and hot water heater. According to the police, the family members adjusted the heater until its light turned on. Subsequently, they left the residence without further contact with the elderly couple, as reported by the Post.
