'Mosquito Tornado' causes panic in Pune as it sweeps through residential areas

PTC News Desk: Pune residents witness an unusual phenomenon dubbed as a "mosquito tornado" swirling over the Mutha river. The swirling mass of mosquitoes has caused panic among residents in areas like Mundhwa, Keshavnagar, and Kharadi.

Concerned citizens have taken to social media, urging authorities to address the mosquito menace. They highlight the health risks associated with mosquito breeding, including diseases like malaria, dengue, and chikungunya.

The mosquito outbreak is linked to the increased water level in the Mula-Mutha River, particularly in Kharadi. Despite efforts by the Pune Municipal Corporation to remove excess water, the situation remains challenging. The mosquito infestation has affected various establishments along the riverbed, including high-rise buildings, IT parks, schools, sports stadiums, and local villages.

The reduced water flow caused by projects like a small dam and a water treatment plant has created stagnant water pools ideal for mosquito breeding. Similar tornadoes of mosquitoes have been reported in regions like Central America and Russia during the rainy season.
