Washington DC, August 7: The fantasy comedy-drama 'Barbie,' starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, has surpassed the $1 billion mark globally in just its third weekend.

The makers celebrated the achievement on Instagram, thanking Barbie fans worldwide for making their dreams come true. They announced, "#BarbieTheMovie has hit $1 billion at the Global Box Office."

With this accomplishment, director Greta Gerwig becomes the first-ever solo woman filmmaker to helm a billion-dollar film, as reported by US-based media house, Variety. While three other billion-dollar blockbusters were co-directed by women, 'Barbie' stands out as Gerwig's singular achievement.

The movie's tremendous success came just 17 days after its release, making it the fastest Warner Bros release to join the exclusive $1 billion club. It broke the record previously held by 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,' which achieved this milestone in 19 days.

'Barbie' is the second blockbuster of the year and the sixth in the pandemic era to cross the $1 billion mark, following 'Spider-Man: No Way Home,' 'Top Gun: Maverick,' 'Jurassic World Dominion,' and 'Avatar: The Way of Water,' according to Variety.

Directed by Greta Gerwig, 'Barbie' stars Margot Robbie as the iconic doll and Ryan Gosling as her boyfriend Ken. The film made its theatrical debut on July 21. Impressively, 'Barbie' earned $155 million during its opening weekend, making it the biggest debut ever for a film directed by a woman, as stated by Variety.
