Punjab: Sutlej river flooding prompts evacuation in Ropar as Bhakra dam waters released
In Gurdaspur, the Army, BSF, and NDRF personnel have been dispatched as floodwaters inundate around twenty villages
Chandigarh, August 16: NDRF teams sprang into action on Wednesday to evacuate seven individuals from Harsa Bela village in Ropar as the Sutlej River inundated the region following the release of water from the Bhakra Dam by BBMB.
Overseeing the evacuation at Harsa Bela village, Deputy Commissioner Preeti Yadav ensured the safety of affected residents.
In Gurdaspur, a collective effort involving the Army, BSF, and NDRF personnel has been deployed, addressing the floodwaters encroaching upon approximately two dozen villages.
The town's connectivity has been severed, as the Mukerian bridge has been shut to traffic due to the deluge. The Gurdaspur-Mukerian link road has suffered significant damage due to the overflowing waters.
Officials from the irrigation department communicated that a substantial 70,000 cusecs of water is being discharged from the Bhakra Dam. The dam's water level presently stands at 1677.7 feet, marginally below the danger mark of 1,680 feet.
Similarly, the Pong Dam's water level is recorded at 1,398.68 feet, slightly above the danger mark of 1,390 feet.
