PTC News Desk: Elon Musk, the Executive Chair of Twitter, has announced a significant change to the platform in an effort to limit data scraping. In a post on Saturday, Musk stated that Twitter will restrict the number of tweets that accounts can read per day to discourage "extreme levels" of data scraping and system manipulation.

Under the new restrictions, verified accounts will be temporarily limited to reading 6,000 posts per day, while unverified accounts will be limited to 600 posts per day. Additionally, new unverified accounts will face a stricter limitation of 300 posts per day.

Musk further revealed that these limitations will soon be increased. Verified users will eventually be allowed to read up to 8,000 posts per day, while unverified users will have a limit of 800 posts per day. New unverified users will be permitted to read 400 posts per day. However, Musk did not provide specific details about when these increased limits will be implemented.

The decision to impose these restrictions stems from concerns over the aggressive scraping of Twitter data by numerous organizations. Musk expressed dissatisfaction with the impact this has on the user experience. It is worth noting that Musk has previously criticized artificial intelligence firms, such as OpenAI (the owner of ChatGPT), for utilizing Twitter data to train their large language models.

In recent times, Twitter has been making efforts to regain the trust of advertisers who left the platform during Musk's ownership. The introduction of verification check marks as part of the Twitter Blue program has been one such initiative aimed at boosting subscription revenue.

Overall, Elon Musk's announcement signifies a proactive step by Twitter to address the issue of data scraping and protect the user experience on the platform. By implementing temporary limitations on the number of tweets that accounts can read, Twitter aims to discourage excessive data scraping while considering future increases to accommodate user demands.
