New Delhi, August 23: Reports of the demise of legendary Zimbabwe cricketer Heath Streak have been challenged after a contradictory statement emerged from his former teammate, Henry Olonga. Initially, news of Streak's death had circulated, leading to a flood of tributes. However, Olonga's subsequent statement revealed that the cricketer is, in fact, alive.

Following the initial announcement of Heath Streak's death on X, Henry Olonga posted a second tweet asserting that rumors of his demise were exaggerated and that he had personally heard from Streak. Olonga's updated tweet read, "I can confirm that rumors of the demise of Heath Streak have been greatly exaggerated. I just heard from him. The third umpire has called him back. He is very much alive folks."

Olonga's earlier tweet, which has since been deleted, had triggered a flurry of reports and messages regarding Heath Streak's supposed death. This included posts from numerous Zimbabwean and international cricketers on X (formerly Twitter).

In his initial tweet, Olonga wrote, "Sad news coming through that Heath Streak has crossed to the other side. RIP @ZimCricketv legend. The greatest all-rounder we produced. It was a pleasure playing with you. See you on the other side when my bowling spell comes to an end..."

Heath Streak is a highly decorated cricketer, having represented Zimbabwe in 65 Tests and 189 ODIs, with notable achievements of 4933 runs and 455 wickets across formats. Streak remains the sole Zimbabwean player with the distinction of scoring 1000 runs and taking 100 wickets in Tests, and 2000 runs and 200 wickets in ODIs. His records continue to inspire cricketers worldwide.

Streak had been battling colon and liver cancer and his health had reportedly deteriorated in May, leading to his hospitalization. Teammates and fellow cricketers expressed their sorrow and paid tribute on X, with Sean Williams writing, "Streaky. No words can explain what you and your family have done for mine and many others. Our hearts are broken, you leave behind a beautiful family and a legacy for us to live up to! You will be missed, we love you dearly. Rest in peace streaky."

Streak's family had previously confirmed his cancer diagnosis and ongoing treatment. They stated, "Heath has cancer and is undergoing treatment under one of the most respected oncologists in South Africa. He remains in good spirits and will continue to fight this disease in a similar vein to that which his opponents faced during his revered days on the cricket field."
