IPL 2024: MS Dhoni steps down as CSK captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad takes charge

IPL 2024: Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Thursday stepped down as captain of  Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the upcoming season of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. The five-time IPL champion franchise has announced star opener Ruturaj Gikwad as the new captain.

"MS Dhoni handed over Chennai Super Kings' captaincy to batter Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period," CSK said in an official statement.

Dhoni led CSK in 212 IPL matches of which they won won 128 and lost 82. 

Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on August 15, 2020, after leading the team to victories in the 2007 T20 World Cup, 2011 ODI World Cup, and 2013 Champions Trophy. 

Last year, Dhoni led the Chennai franchise to a record-tying fifth IPL title against the Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad. The 42-year-old has captained Chennai from the inaugural IPL season in 2008, except two years when his team was suspended from the event due to fixing charges.
