R@p3 charges against AIG Ashish Kapoor: SIT files cancellation report in Mohali District Court

Mohali, August 27: The Special Investigation Team probing rape charges against Punjab AIG Ashish Kapoor has filed a cancellation report in the Mohali District Court for lack of evidence. The SIT has not found any evidence against Punjab AIG Ashish Kapoor. However, the court is yet to accept the report. He had been booked on the charges of "raping" a woman in Patiala between 2016 and 2018. He was nominated in the FIR by the State Special Operations Cell (SSOC). The FIR was previously against some jail officials and gangsters. AIG Kapoor was nominated on charges of rape, criminal intimidation and under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The rape charge was added to the existing FIR, which was registered on May 1. Rape charges against AIG Ashish Kapoor: SIT files cancellation report in Mohali District Court The move came following a report of then IG Kunwar Vijay Partap Singh, who was probing the role of some jail officials for seeking extortion from an inmate in Patiala. In the complaint, the woman had alleged that she had come in contact with AIG Ashish Kapoor when he was Jail Superintendent of Amritsar Central Jail. The woman was lodged in the jail in connection with an immigration fraud case in 2016.

However, following a dispute, the AIG implicated her and her mother in another case and she was sent to Patiala jail. Earlier, the Punjab Vigilance Bureau had raided the residence of Punjab Police AIG Ashish Kapoor in Sector-88 in Mohali. A team of the Vigilance Bureau reached his house at 5 am. According to information, the Vigilance Bureau team checked the documents related to his property. On the other hand, AIG Ashish Kapoor pleaded innocent and claimed that "he has not done anything wrong, and therefore is ready for any inquiry". Read more -PTC News with inputs from Neha Sharma
