Punjab: Fatal exchange of fire between Nihang Sikhs, Kapurthala police at gurdwara; 1 cop dead, 3 injured
Kapurthala, November 23: A tragic incident occurred at a gurdwara in Kapurthala, Punjab where a fatal exchange of fire took place between Nihang Sikhs and Kapurthala police , resulting in the death of one police official and injuring three others.
Tensions arose due to alleged disputes over gurdwara's administrative management.
As per the official statement, the head of the Baba Buddha Dal, Baba Balveer Singh had occupied the front of a Gurudwara, where his 2 aides, Nirvair Singh and Jagjit Singh, were seated.
On November 21, 2023, the head of the second breakaway faction of Baba Buddha Dal, Baba Maan Singh Vallo, along with 15-20 other companions, forcibly entered the Gurduwara.
After entering the Gurudwara, the Baba Maan Singh-led group tied Nirvair Singh with a rope while Jagjit Singh was attacked by a weapon and his ammunition, mobile phone and money were taken from him after which the group occupied the Gurdwara and other places.
The police have arrested 10 Nihang Sikhs for interrogation. As per the police officials, at least 30 Nihang Sikhs are still inside the gurdwara.
The distressing incident unfolded when police cops went to arrest Nihangs in Sultanpur Lodhi in a case registered against them.
Senior officials and other police officials rushed to the site as soon as the tragic incident took place.
The investigation is ongoing, awaiting further details on this distressing event.
Nihang Sikhs are a group of Sikh warriors who have historically played a significant role in the Sikh community. Nihangs have a unique identity characterised by their distinctive blue attire, which includes a tall turban known as a "dastaar" , blue robes, and weapons such as swords, spears, and daggers. They are known for their martial prowess and traditionally served as the military defenders of the Sikh community.
