Rajpura, January 21: Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema launched a major campaign against GST and tax evasion on Saturday. The finance minister personally conducted a raid on the Delhi-Amritsar National Highway. There have been numerous allegations of tax evasion levelled against the GST department, and the government has now begun its investigation.
During a raid on the National Highway, Finance Minister Harpal Cheema apprehended around 15-16 trucks that did not have the required documents and bills to present to the government. Based on this, it imposed a Rs. 10 lakh fine on each truck owner.
This is one of the most significant actions taken by the Punjab government against GST and tax evasion. Previously, many allegations were levelled against the GST department. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau is also investigating some GST department officers.
Harpal Cheema also released a video in which he stated that their team learned about some vehicles travelling on the National Highway without proper documentation based on information provided by sources. He went on to say that as soon as the team received information, they headed to the Delhi-Amritsar National Highway and carried out a successful raid.
He also stated that the Punjab government will address the issue of GST and tax evasion in the state through its actions.
