PTC News Desk: In a big decision on Wednesday, the Punjab and Haryana High Court stayed the Panchayat elections in several villages in Punjab. The development came as the High Court heard at least 250 petitions over irregularities surrounding the Panchayat elections in the state.

The High Court stayed the panchayat elections after receiving a petition filed from multiple villages, alleging intimidation and rigging.

According to the information, the High Court has issued this order on 250 petitions filed in the court, and Panchayat elections will not take place until further orders.

Earleir, in the day, Punjab and Haryana High Court took a firm stance on the series of legal challenges surrounding the Panchayat elections in the state. The HC flayed the Punjab Government for its handling of the electoral process and demanded an explanation regarding the appointment of State Election Commissioner Raj Kamal Chaudhuri within one hour.

During the proceedings, the Punjab and Haryana High Court highlighted concerns over the prevailing chaos and potential breaches of democratic norms, stating, "The government must clarify whether it intends to withdraw the election notification and undertake a more efficient electoral process. If not, the court will have no choice but to issue strict orders."
