Punjab and Haryana HC grants three-hour parole to Balwant Singh Rajoana
Rajoana's brother passed away on November 14 | He has been granted parole under tight police security
PTC Web Desk: The Punjab and Haryana High Court has granted a temporary parole of three hours to Balwant Singh Rajoana to attend Antim Ardas ceremony of his late brother, Kulwant Singh Rajoana. The court has permitted him to be present under full police custody at the ceremony scheduled for November 20 from 11 am to 2 pm, at a gurdwara sahib in Ludhiana.
Balwant Singh Rajoana had filed a petition seeking temporary parole after his earlier request to the Superintendent of Patiala Jail, where he is currently lodged, was denied. In his plea, Rajoana mentioned that his brother passed away on November 14, and the religious ceremonies to honour him are being held on November 20.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court, considering his plea, directed the Punjab Government to make adequate security arrangements during his presence at the ceremony.
In January 2022, the High Court had similarly granted Rajoana permission to attend the Antim Ardas of his late father under police custody.
Balwant Singh Rajoana, a resident of Rajoana Kalan village in Ludhiana district, was convicted for his role in the 1995 assassination of Punjab Chief Minister Beant Singh. On August 31, 1995, Beant Singh and 16 others were killed in a suicide bombing carried out by Dilawar Singh, while Rajoana served as a backup bomber. Rajoana has been in jail for over 25 years.
