PTC Web Desk: The Punjab Government has announced a public holiday on December 27 to mark the Shaheedi Diwas of Chaar Sahibzaadas of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Panjab University (PU) has confirmed the closure of all its affiliated institutions, regional centres, rural centres, and affiliated colleges across the state. Administrative offices of these institutions will also remain closed.

The decision coincides with the observance of Veer Bal Diwas, declared to commemorate the supreme sacrifice of Chaar Sahibzaadas and Mata Gujri Ji.

The Shaheedi Diwas of Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s four sons and Mata Gujri Ji is remembered with reverence every year during Shaheedi Jor Mela at Fatehgarh Sahib. Devotees from across the country gather to pay homage to their unparalleled sacrifice.

In 1705, after Guru Gobind Singh Ji and his family were separated near the Sirsa River during their retreat from Anandpur Sahib, elder Sahibzaadas, Baba Ajit Singh and Baba Jujhar Singh, remained with Guru Ji and attained martyrdom during the Battle of Chamkaur Sahib.

The younger Sahibzaadas, Baba Zorawar Singh (9 years old) and Baba Fateh Singh (7 years old), were captured along with Mata Gujri Ji. They were taken to Fatehgarh Sahib and pressured to convert to Islam, but they refused steadfastly. As a result, the two young Sahibzaadas endured three days and two nights in the freezing Cold Tower (Thanda Burj) before being brutally executed by being bricked alive. Shortly after, Mata Gujri Ji also attained martyrdom.
