Mother, child die from asphyxiation in Mohali, father in critical condition
The police confirmed that the deaths were caused by the smoke from the coal stove
PTC Web Desk: A tragic incident occurred in Mohali on the intervening night of December 26 and 27, where a mother and her child died from asphyxiation after a coal stove was lit in a closed room to keep warm, while the father was hospitalised in a critical condition. The incident took place in the Punjab Greater Society in New Chandigarh.
According to the house owner, Deepak, a domestic worker from Nepal, lived in the servant quarters with his wife Parshupati and their 18-month-old child. On the night of the incident, Deepak, his wife, and child went to sleep and lit a coal stove to protect themselves from the cold. During the night, Deepak began to experience difficulty breathing and attempted to wake his wife and child. However, both were unresponsive, and the room filled with smoke, causing Deepak to lose consciousness as well.
The house owner immediately informed the Mullapur police station and control room. A police team arrived at the scene and rushed the three victims to the hospital. They were later referred to PGI Chandigarh, where the woman and child were declared dead. Deepak’s condition remains critical, and he is undergoing treatment.
The police have initiated an investigation into the incident. The SHO confirmed that the deaths were caused by the smoke from the coal stove.
